     Nabi Agung Muhammad SAW merupakan panutan seluruh umat muslim di dunia. Namun  wajah Nabi Muhammad SAW dilarang oleh islam untuk ditampilkan baik dalam foto, film dan lainya. Gak usah dipikir pusing-pusing, toh jaman dulu juga belum ada foto, lukisanya pun juga gak ada. Sebagai contoh Nabi Yusuf (most beautiful man on earth) tidak ada yang boleh menggambarkan rupanya, karena kita juga gak tahu aslinya, masak kita mau ngarang-ngarang, apalagi sampai dibandingkan sama Brad Pitt… haha, oke deh langsung aja, berikut merupakan ciri-ciri fisik Nabi Muhammad SAW yang digambarkan oleh orang-orang terdekatnya.

•    Sosok Muhammad digambarkan oleh salah satu istinya Aisyah, sepupunya Ali bin Abi Thalib, para sahabatnya, serta orang terakhir yang masih hidup yang kala itu sempat melihat sosoknya secara langsung, yaitu Abu Taufik adalah rambut ikal berwarna sedikit kemerahan terurai hingga bahu. Kulit putih kemerah-merahan, wajah cenderung bulat dengan mata hitam dan bulu mata panjang. Tidak berkumis dan berjanggut sepanjang sekepalan telapak tangannya. Tulang kepala besar dan bahu lebar. Berperawakan sedang dan atletis. Jemari tangan dan kaki tebal dan lentik memanjang. Langkahnya cenderung cepat dan tidak pernah menancapkan kedua telapak kaki dan dengan langkah yang cepat dan pasti. Muhammad dicirikan sangat unik oleh para sahabatnya. Muhammad digambarkan sebagai orang yang berkulit putih dan berjenggot hitam dengan uban.

• Dalam hadits lain diterangkan mengenai corak fisik Muhammad, yaitu ia bertubuh sedang, kulitnya berwarna cerah tidak terlalu putih dan tidak pula hitam. Rambutnya berombak. Ketika Muhammad wafat uban yang tumbuh di rambut dan janggutnya masih sedikit.

• Ali menambahkan bahwa Muhammad memiliki rambut lurus sedikit berombak. Tidak gemuk dan tidak terlalu besar, berperawak baik dan tegak. Warna kulit cerah, matanya hitam dengan bulu mata yang panjang. Persendian tulang yang kuat dada, tangan dan kakinya kekar. Tidak memiliki bulu yang tebal tetapi hanya tipis dari dada sampai pusarnya. Jika berbicara dengan seseorang, maka ia akan menghadapkan wajahnya keorang tersebut dengan penuh perhatian. Di antara bahunya ada tanda kenabian. Muhammad orang yang baik hatinya dan paling jujur, orang yang paling dirindukan dan sebaik-baiknya keturunan. Siapa saja yang mendekati dan bergaul dengannya maka akan langsung merasa terhormat, khidmat, menghargai dan mencintainya. Hidungnya agak melengkung dan mengkilap jika terkena cahaya serta tampak agak menonjol jika pertama kali melihatnya padahal sebenarnya tidak. Berjanggut tipis tapi penuh rata sampai pipi. Mulutnya sedang, giginya putih cemerlang dan agak renggang. Pundaknya bagus dan kokoh, seperti dicor perak. Anggota tubuh lainnya normal dan proporsional. Dada dan pinggangnya seimbang dengan ukurannya. Tulang belikatnya cukup lebar, bagian-bagian tubuhnya tidak tertutup bulu lebat, bersih dan bercahaya. Kecuali bulu halus yang tumbuh dari dada hingga pusar. Lengan dan dada bagian atas berbulu. Pergelangan tangannya cukup panjang, telapak tangannya agak lebar serta tangan dan kakinya berisi, jari-jari tangan dan kaki cukup langsing. Jika berjalan agak condong kedepan melangkah dengan anggun serta berjalan dengan cepat dan sering melihat kebawah dari pada keatas. Jika berhadapan dengan orang maka ia memandang orang itu dengan penuh perhatian dan tidak pernah melototi seseorang dan pandangannya menyejukkan. Selalu berjalan agak dibelakang, terutama jika saat melakukan perjalanan jarak jauh dan ia selalu menyapa orang lain terlebih dahulu.

• Dari kisah Jabir bin Samurah meriwayatkan bahwa Muhammad memiliki mulut yang agak lebar, di matanya terlihat juga garis-garis merahnya, serta tumitnya langsing. Jabir (ra) juga meriwayatkan bahwa ia berkesempatan melihat Muhammad di bawah sinar rembulan, ia juga memperhatikan pula rembulan tersebut, baginya Muhammad lebih indah dari rembulan tersebut.

• Abu Ishaq mengemukakan bahwa, Bara’a bin Aazib pernah berkata, bahwa rona Muhammad lebih mirip purnama yang cerah.

• Abu Hurairah mengatakan bahwa Muhammad sangatlah rupawan, seperti dibentuk dari perak. Rambutnya cenderung berombak dan Abu Hurairah belum pernah melihat orang yang lebih baik dari dan lebih tampan dari Muhammad, rona mukanya secemerlang matahari dan tidak pernah melihat orang yang secepatnya. Seolah-olah tanah digulung oleh langkah-langkah Muhammad jika sedang berjalan. Dikatakan jika Abu Hurairah dan yang lainnya berusaha mengimbangi jalannya Muhammad dan nampak ia seperti berjalan santai saja.

• Jabir bin Abdullah mengatakan, Muhammad pernah bersabda bahwa ia pernah menyaksikan gambaran tentang para nabi. Di antaranya adalah Musa berperawakan langsing seperti orang-orang dari Suku Shannah, dan melihat Isa yang mirip salah seorang sahabatnya yang bernama Urwah bin Mas’ud dan ketika melihat Ibrahim dikatakan sangat mirip dengan dirinya sendiri (Muhammad), kemudian Muhammad juga mengatakan bahwa ia pernah melihat Malaikat Jibril yang mirip dengan Dehya Kalbi.

• Said al Jahiri mengatakan bahwa ia pernah mendengar Abu Taufik berkata bahwa pada saat ini tidak ada lagi yang masih hidup orang yang pernah melihat secara langsung Muhammad kecuali dirinya sendiri dan Muhammad memiliki roman muka sangat cerah dan perawakanna sangat baik.

• Ibnu Abbas mengatakan bahwa gigi depan Muhammad agak renggang tidak terlalu rapat dan jika bericara nampak putih berkilau.

Palm Island, pulau buatan terbesar di Dunia

      

      Palm Islands merupakan kepulauan buatan di Dubai, Uni Emirat Arab dimana infrastruktur perdagangan dan penghunian akan dibangun. Kepulauan ini menjadi proyek reklamasi tanah terbesar di dunia dan membentuk kepulauan buatan terbesar di dunia. Kesemuanya dibangun oleh Nakheel Properties, sebuah pembangun properti di Uni Emirat Arab, yang menyewa kontraktor pengerukan Belanda, Van Oord, salah satu ahli terkenal dalam reklamasi tanah. Pulau-pulau itu adalah Palm Jumeirah, Palm Jebel Ali dan Palm Deira.

     Kepulauan ini diciptakan oleh Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum yang bertujuan untuk meningkatkan pariwisata di Dubai. Setiap pulau akan berbentuk pohon palem, diatapi sebuah sabit, dan akan memiliki jumlah besar penghunian, kebutuhan dan pusat hiburan. Palm Islands terletak di lepas pantai Uni Emirat Arab di Teluk Persia dan akan menambah 250 km pantai kota Dubai.

Palm Jumeriah

     Palm Jumeirah meliputi sebuah batang, sebuah mahkota dengan 17 cabang, dan pulau sabit yang mengelilinginya dan membentuk pemecah gelombang sepanjang 11 kilometer. Pulau itu sendiri memiliki luas 5 kilometer kali 5 kilometer. Akan menambah 78 kilometer tepi pantai Dubai. Fase pertama pembangunan Palm Jumeirah adalah pembuatan 4.000 penghunian dengan campuran villa dan apartemen untuk 3 hingga 4 tahun berikutnya.

     Nakheel Properties akan menandai tibanya penghuni pertama dengan membawa salah satu kapal udara terbesar di dunia ke Dubai. Merupakan persetujuan dengan Airship Management Services Inc. untuk sebuah kapal udara Skyship 600 sepanjang 197 kaki (60 m), dan seluas 250.000 kaki kubik (7.100 m³).

Palm Jebel Ali

      Palm Jebel Ali memulai pembangunannya pada Oktober 2002 dan dijadwalkan selesai pada pertengahan 2008. Palm Jebel Ali diperkirakan merumahkan 1.7 juta orang tahun 2020. Setelah selesai, pulau ini akan dilingkari oleh Dubai Waterfront. Proyek ini, yang 50 persen lebih besar dari Palm Jumeirah, akan meliputi enam marina, sebuah taman hiburan air, 'Sea Village', rumah panggung di atas air, dan trotoar yang melingkari "cabang" "palem".

Pada awal Oktober 2007, pembangunan pulau dilaksanakan. Pemecah gelombang selesai bulan Desember 2006, dan infrastruktur mulai dibuat pada April 2007. Pembangunan besar tidak dimulai hingga pembuatan infrastruktur selesai. Tahun 2012, fase pertama dari empat taman hiburan akan dibuka di Pulau Sabit. Taman ini, yang kemudian dinamai "World of Discovery," akan dibangun dan dioperasikan oleh Busch Entertainment Corporation. Taman itu meliputi SeaWorld, Aquatica, Busch Gardens dan Discovery Cove. Palm Deira

     Palm Deira diumumkan pembangunannya bulan Oktober 2004. Setelah selesai, akan menjadi pulau buatan manusia terbesar di dunia yang merumahkan lebih dari satu juta orang. Meskipun tanggal selesainya belum diumumkan, tetapi dijadwalkan selesai tahun 2015. Pulau ini 8 kali lebih besar dari Palm Jumeirah, dan 5 kali lebih besar dari Palm Jebel Ali. Sebenarnya, rancangan ini adalah sebuah pulau seluas 14 km (8.7 mil) kali 8.5 km (5.3 mil) dengan 41 cabang. Karena perubahan substansial dalam kedalaman Teluk Persia, pulau ini dirancang ulang pada Mei 2007. Proyek ini kemudian menjadi pulau seluas 12.5 km (7.76 mil) kali 7.5 km (4.66 mil) dengan 18 cabang besar.

Beyond Ötzi: European Evolutionary History and its Relevance to Diet. Part II

In previous posts, I described how Otzi was (at least in large part) a genetic descendant of Middle Eastern agriculturalists, rather than being purely descended from local hunter-gatherers who adopted agriculture in situ.  I also reviewed evidence showing that modern Europeans are a genetic mixture of local European hunter-gatherers, incoming agricultural populations from the Middle East, neanderthals, and perhaps other groups.  In this post, I'll describe the evidence for rapid human evolution since the end of the Paleolithic period, and research indicating that some of these changes are adaptations to the Neolithic (agricultural/horticultural/pastoral) diet.

Humans have Evolved Significantly Since the End of the Paleolithic

Evolution by natural selection leaves a distinct signature in the genome, and geneticists can detect this signature tens of thousands of years after the fact by comparing many genomes to one another.  A landmark paper published in 2007 by Dr. John Hawks and colleagues showed that humans have been undergoing "extraordinarily rapid recent genetic evolution" over the last 40,000 years (1).  Furthermore:

Abbott Pleads Guilty, Settles for $1.6 Billion, but No Individuals Suffer Negative Consequences

Once again, another big US health care organization is set to make a (monetarily) huge legal settlement.  As reported by Bloomberg, Abbott Laboratories will settle allegations about its marketing of Depakote (valproic acid), nominally an anti-seizure medication:

Abbott Laboratories (ABT) (ABT) said it will pay $1.6 billion to settle federal and state claims resulting from an investigation into its epilepsy medication Depakote, the second-largest drug-marketing settlement in U.S. history.

The company will pay $800 million to resolve civil allegations split among federal and state governments, $700 million for a criminal penalty, the Justice Department said in a statement. Abbott marketed the drug, approved for epilepsy, bipolar mania and migraine prevention, for unapproved uses including dementia, the U.S. said.

Huge, but not Compared to Sales

The story included all the obligatory pieces. The settlement is huge, the second largest such financial settlement made by a drug company. However, compared to the money made by the product in question, it was not so large, as noted by the Wall Street Journal,

Depakote was once one of Abbott's best-selling drugs, racking up $1.6 billion in sales for 2007, before patent expirations cleared the way for cheaper generic copies.

A Guilty Plea, of Sorts

The settlement did require the company to

plead guilty to a criminal misdemeanor violation of a federal drug law

per the WSJ, but not to a felony. Nor did it appear that any individual would be charged with anything in connection with this settlement.

Admitting to Deception, Covering Kickbacks

This was so even though the allegations involved more than "misbranding." In fact, the Bloomberg story stated that the company admitted to active deception of physicians and health professionals,

'Abbott admits that from 1998 through 2006, the company maintained a specialized sales force trained to market Depakote in nursing homes for the control of agitation and aggression in elderly dementia patients, despite the absence of credible scientific evidence that Depakote was safe and effective for that use,' the Justice Department said in its statement today.

Abbott also marketed the drug to be used with certain antipsychotic drugs to treat schizophrenia, 'even after its clinical trials failed to demonstrate that adding Depakote was any more effective than an atypical antipsychotic alone for that use,' the Justice Department said.

In addition, the settlement also "covers" allegations of what amounts to bribery.

The settlement also covers allegations that Abbott paid kickbacks to health-care professionals and long-term care pharmacy providers to induce them to promote or prescribe Depakote, the Justice Department said in its statement today.

We Promise Not to Do Such Bad Things for Five Years

Yet despite these implications of massive deception and bribery of health care professionals, the only other punishment is a sort of probationary period during which the company promises not to do such things, per the WSJ.

Under the settlement, Abbott agreed to a five-year probationary period. During this term, Abbott will report any probable violations of the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act to the probation office, according to the Justice Department.

Also, its chief executive will certify compliance with this reporting requirement, and its board will report annually on the effectiveness of the company's compliance program.

In addition, Abbott agreed not to compensate sales reps for off-label sales and take other steps during the probationary period.

A Bland Admission of Nothing

As is customary, an Abbott spokesperson provided a bland, positive statement that admitted no wrong-doing, per the WSJ,

'We are pleased to resolve this matter and are confident we have the programs in place to satisfy the requirements of this settlement,' Abbott General Counsel Laura Schumacher said in a news release. 'The company takes its responsibility to patients and health care providers seriously and has established robust compliance programs to ensure its marketing programs meet the needs of health care providers and legal requirements.'

Previous Misbehavior

Apparently not taken account into stories about or the crafting of the current settlement was Abbott's previous record of legal misadventures:

Obstructing Justice - In 2003, an Abbott subsidiary settled civil allegations and pleaded guilty to obstructing a federal criminal investigation of its marketing practices, resulting in fines of $614 million (mentioned in this post, and see the Los Angeles Times.)
Suppressing Reports of Drug Contamination - In 2009, the FDA charged that an Abbott subsidiary failed to report bacterial contamination of an optic product (see post here).
Blocking Generic Competition - In 2010, Abbott settled with the New York state Attorney General allegations that the company conspired to block generic competition for its lipid lowering drug TriCor (see Reuters and our post here).
Inflating Charges - In 2010, Abbott also settled with the US Justice Department for $421 million charges that it defrauded Medicare and Medicaid (see post here).
Paying Kickbacks to Doctors - In 2010, an Abbott subsidiary also settled with the US government charges it paid kickbacks to physicians to prescribe other cholesterol lowering drugs (see post here).
Anti-Competitive Pricing Practices - In 2011, Abbott settled lawsuits alleging that its anti-competitive practices inflated prices of anti-viral drugs (see post here).

More Richs for the CEO

Despite this now long record of ethical missteps, the Abbott CEO gets richer every year. In 2009, his total compensation was over $26 million (see this post). According to the company's 2012 proxy statement, his pay has gone down ever so slightly, from $25,564,283 in 2010 to $24,010,902 in 2011, but still approximately 480 times the median earning of a US family.

Summary

The march of legal settlements progresses. Despite its showy finery of legal language, it fails to include meaningful negative consequences for any individuals, and particularly for those who authorized, directed or implemented unethical actions. It provides the illusion of financial punishment of the organizations involved. However, the amounts paid, albeit large, never approach how much money was brought in by the bad behavior. Furthermore, the costs are diffused among many employees, and for publicly held for-profit corporations, among the nominal owners, the stock-holders. Yet the top executives who personally gained the most almost never have had to answer for the misbehavior, and despite of, or perhaps because of the misbehavior continue to collect voluminous compensation.

Despite promises of tougher action, nothing seems to be changing in this parade. However, without real penalties for individuals involved in bad behavior, expect to deterrent of future bad behavior.

So once more,.... if we really want to reform health care, we must make the leaders of health care organizations accountable for their organizations' effects on patients' and the public's health, and make sure they get reasonable, not royal compensation reasonably related to their organizations' performance, including ethical performance.

i had quite a weekend....saturday a girlfriend and i headed out for a road trip to go shopping....we made a little pit stop for gas about half way to our destination.  it was an unusually difficult process pumping gas....i was in the middle aisle of the gas station, everything was touch screen...it said select fuel, there was one button so i pressed it.  it took forever to pump so i only got a quarter of a tank. well, we got back on the road and immediately my car started acting funny.....like we were dragging someone.  we pulled off the interstate and examined the car...no one was under there (thankfully).  then, i confessed to my friend how difficult it was getting gas....well, to make a long story short- i pumped my car full of kerosene.  yes, apparently they now have it in the middle aisle of gas stations.  our girls trip, halted quickly as we headed very nervously to the closest toyota dealership 45 minutes down the road....they spent the next 6 hour removing it from my tank.  apparently it's not a good idea to use kerosene in your car.....it will put a huge damper on your shopping trip, your wallet, your husband won't be happy, and it will make you the butt of jokes for quite sometime!  just a little warning guys :)

METABOLIC ADAPTATIONS TO A "STUFF AND STARVE" FEEDING PROGRAM. I. STUDIES OF ADIPOSE TISSUE AND LIVER GLYCOGEN IN RATS LIMITED TO A SHORT DAILY FEEDING PERIOD

This is quite an old study, published in 1962, and it's in rats who are known to have greater DNL in adipose tissue.  This was a fairly short study, wherein rats were put on a 2 hr/day ad libitum eating schedule for one week.  Intake was 60% lower on day 1, but back up to 95% of normal ad libitum intake by the second day.  Thus the rats lost weight early on, but were back within 10% of their start weight by week's end.  

Essentially it appears that in short order with a switch to such a regime, adipose tissue storage and DNL in adipose tissue is upregulated considerably (10 fold).  Normally a 24 hr fasted rat will have depleted glycogen stores as some is burned along with fatty acids.  Rats adapted to this regime had full liver glycogen after the 24 hr fast indicating that they likely use fats preferentially for fuel.  

Interesting ... not sure what it means in humans.  But if something similar occurs, it could explain the insulin resistance many IF'ers seem to have, as non-oxidative glucose disposal -- e.g. glycogen synthesis -- is a major route of glucose disposal that is "defective" in IR states when reserves are high.  Especially with LC, if glycogen is spared and glycogenolysis doesn't provide blood glucose, gluconeogenesis would be upregulated. The combo with hepatic IR may well be the reason why IF'ers often have quite high fasting blood glucose.

Just eat half a pizza and be done with it!

If you haven't already done so, I highly recommend an internet bop on over to Anthony Colpo's blog to read his awesome interview with Muata Kamdibe.   Muata made a number of great points in that interview that resonated with me and that I've been meaning to blog on before this past week's little diversion.  So this probably won't be the last post inspired by that interview.  I first "met" Muata on James Krieger's Weightology website, and you may recognize the unique name as someone who comments here occasionally. So in the context of discussing getting obsessed over PubMed studies and scientific minutia (yes, I'm guilty of that quite often!), Muata said:

Also, folks who do actually realize that “Eat Less, Move More” is simply a template, tend to get carried away with macro breakdowns; however, they aren’t willing to track their calories for more than a few weeks. Give me a break! I mean, how silly is it for an obese person to really concern him or herself with how many grams of protein vs. starchy carbs they eat before noon? Yes, I understand that macros are of some importance, especially for athletes, but I still contend that folks needing to lose 75 to 100 pounds need to focus on simply eating less food! The reality is that if you’re used to eating a whole damn pizza in one sitting, a good starting point to lose the chub is to just eat half, pat yourself on the back, and call it a day.
