1001 Kata Kata Cinta

Disgusted with Diet Doctor

The Swedish Diet Doc (does he have any patients?) has been on a roll of late, and it's reached a point where I just have to comment.

For starters, although it would be impossible for every bariatric doc or even a small minority of them to be real-life examples (in the been there, done that department) to be able to promote what has worked for them, at least one might expect that such a doctor wouldn't hold such disdain for them.  When you think about it, medicine is one of those professions where the experts rarely have first-hand knowledge of the fields in which they are often doling out the most personal of advices.  But if you don't like "fat people" then why are you making a living off of "treating" them and dissing them behind their backs (and to their faces)?

Diet Doc even has a label:  Why Americans are Obese.  Sounds OK though.  Yeah, obese is the technical term.  But here is one of the posts on that label: http://www.dietdoctor.com/why-americans-are-fat-part-2.  Note that I didn't change the bare URL which belies the original title of the post, and many others, before someone informed the doc that calling people fat might be insulting and not appropriate for a person of his stature to be doing.

No Defense for Hiring Snow

Atomic_Bomb

When I watch Phil Snow coach defense for the Temple Owls, I am reminded of the quote of  J. Robert Oppenheimer, one of the two fathers of the Atomic Bomb.

Snow's working for the Temple Owls (link to Owl ESPN page here), we don't know how hard, to stop Army's frisky triple-option offense. For those so inclined to bet, you can cast a few sheckles over at SportsBet Blog. Army is a 2.5-point favorite, according to Fox Sports Temple Owls' page.

Oppenheimer was asked what his first reaction was to seeing the A-Bomb “work” in the New Mexico desert. He said he thought of a quote from the Hindu scripture Bhagavad Gita: "Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.”

“Now I have become Phil Snow,  the destroyer of programs.”

That’s the quote rattling around in my head when I watch Temple play defense.

Don’t take my word for it. To quote Denise Simpson when talking about O.J., “You know his record.”

We'll only go back to 2008, because it's too depressing to go back before that.
Let's put it this way: Snow's last shutout against a Division IA team (they were know as Division IA teams then) was 1996. That's the last century for anyone counting.
In his last 70 games against Division IA foes, he's held teams to single digits just three times.
That's three as in the number after two.
Last year, he had the Eastern Michigan defense ranked No. 120 of 125 FBS teams in yards-per-game with a 453.91-per-game yield.
This year, he has Temple's defense ranked No. 120 out of 125 teams with a 510.8-yards-per-game yield.
You've got to give him points for being consistent.
... on the offensive side of the ball,

Temple hasn't been much better this year,
scoring ZERO points in the second half
of games vs. Notre Dame, Houston
and Cincinnati. ... doesn't seem to be too
much effective offensive chalkboard
work being done at halftime, either
Before you blame it on the players, these are the same players who Chuck Heater had shutting out UConn in the second half of a 17-14 win. That's when Temple coaches used to make adjustments at halftime.
(Speaking of which, on the offensive side of the ball, Temple hasn't been much better this year, scoring ZERO points in the second half of games vs. Notre Dame, Houston and Cincinnati. That's zero, as in the number before one. Doesn't seem to be too much effective offensive chalkboard work being done at halftime, either.)
When Snow was hired, I wrote I saw no justification in hiring him and speculated it was only because Snow was an old buddy of Matt Rhule's at UCLA. What he's done since hasn't changed my mind at all. This is what I wrote in this blog way back on Jan. 18: "I'm all for hiring old buddies, but not old buddies who give up 38 points per game."
From someone who watched Temple develop a strong defensive identity under Wayne Hardin (Vince Hoch), Bruce Arians (Nick Rapone), Al Golden (Mark D'Onofrio) and Steve Addazio (Heater), this might be the toughest part of the season to swallow. Rapone would coach the DBs to step in front of the ball and intercept it, rather than let the guy catch the ball and tackle him. That produced NFL defensive backs in Terry Wright, Eddie Parker, Todd Bowles and Kevin Ross. In those days, Temple played the ball and not the man.
Heck, when Dick Bedesem was the secondary coach at Temple, the Owls led the nation with 26 interceptions.
This year?
They have zero.
That's as in the number before one.
I might be tempted to say it's the players, but I know the record of the DC all too well.

Daily Blog #113: Sunday Funday 10/13/13 Winner!

Hello Reader,
Another Sunday Funday behind us and more information for us all to share and grow with. I was expecting a wider ranger of answers as this was an IR challenge but the number of entries was fairly low this week, not sure if that's from too much furlough partying or if Linux is again a weak point for responders as well as examiners. With that said our winner this week is Darren Windham, one of our panelists from this week decided to step up to challenge and won!

The Challenge:
You are an internal responder for a hosting provider, almost all of your major systems are in a DMZ to allow customer access. An attacker has breached your network which is CentOS Linux based. You've detected his anomalous traffic to a foreign country as part of a netflow review and you are now worried about lateral movement from the database server you have found. Assuming there is netflow data and a default CentOS install across 10 DMZ based systems what would you do to determine lateral movement.

The Winning Answer:
Darren Windham
Assessment: Assuming a DMZ environment and a default CentOS install then it is likely that auto updates are not enabled and the 9 other servers also have outdated software that allowed the initial breach. Given the environment is a DMZ it is likely that all of the systems have some sort of service open to the internet be it DNS, HTTP/HTTPS, Database, SMTP, etc. Assuming one flat subnet for a DMZ of only 10 hosts lateral movement would likely be easier to accomplish.

Host based Review: To begin on each of the CentOS hosts the various application logs located in /var/log and its various subfolders should be reviewed. By default CentOS will rotate logs weekly and keep 4 weeks worth of previous log files unless changed in /etc/logrotate.conf. These logs should be reviewed to look for signs of account access/creation, services being stopped/started, database connection, etc. A lack of logs or periods of time missing could be signs of log modification. If there are common or shared passwords across the DMZ any activity related to those accounts should also be a priority for review.

Netflow Review:
The netflow data should be reviewed with the focus on traffic to and from the database server. Most normal traffic should be only from the webservers or other application servers accessing the database. Any traffic originating from the database server destined for other systems in the DMZ or out to external hosts all should be reviewed in more detail.

Other thoughts:
In order to provide a clearer picture and to automate the review of this data some sort of correlation/searching tool would be a great asset and allow the responder to search for common terms, IP address, logins, dates/times, etc across all of the data at once. If the DMZ hosts have a path into the internal network via any type of port/protocol all of those systems should be within the scope of the investigation as lateral movement could also occur via ACL’s in a firewall or over a secondary administrative network interface.

This week:
Tomorrow we will start looking over this scenario and discussing how I would handle it.
